With all games and sports then there is rules and etiquette that are based around how the game is played and in a fair and sporting way. Backgammon is certainly no different in this aspect. For example, all players must roll the dice to their right on the board and if dice land outside of the board or even land skewed then the entire role must be taken again.

This is not imperative to the actual game but it is simple etiquette almost like not standing in another player’s line in golf or speaking on their backswing. There are other basic game rules as well like the fact that a players throw isn’t complete until he has picked up his or her dice and the fact that a player may not take their throw until the opponent has finished theirs. If you are going to play serious backgammon or to join a backgammon club then you are going to need to learn the etiquette of the game.

It is somewhat different when you play online as most of the etiquette side of the game is basically done for you and taken out of your hands to a large extent. On the subject of illegal moves then it is the duty of either player to correct the situation but this must be done and completed before the next move has been made. I really feel that it is important for any players even if they only play backgammon online to learn the etiquette of backgammon so that they are prepared for real game play if and when that arrives.
