Frank Scoblete has produced several gambling and casino related books over the past few years. Even though he is not renowned as highly as many others in his field, I have always found his books to be insightful and to offer new views.
In this book he has written it with Christopher Pawlicki which adds mathematical bite to the book. The entire core of the book revolves around a subject that has fascinated me for a long time and that is visual prediction on roulette. Many academics stress that this cannot be done and I do not agree with them.
In my belief, it is possible when certain criteria are present and align themselves. Take away these criteria of rotor speed and visual acuity and it is probably impossible. One of the reasons why a Chess Grandmaster is so good is based on mental recognition of positions that they have either seen or encountered in the past.
This is why masters and Grandmasters do well against chess program’s even though the program is calculating moves at many thousands of times faster than the human brain. I believe that in principle this applies to roulette. The more spins that you observe then the higher your chance of being able to visually predict.
Scoblete and Pawlickli have written a good book here that is well worth a read. Another analogy could be made with poker and the book Supersystem. That book has been derided in many quarters because Doyle talks an awful lot about “feel” in that book and feel cannot be taught.
This is the point of the book because world class poker cannot be put into a book in the same way that financial trading can’t…..they are persoanl skills and in my view then so is visual prediction.
