Seeing as this is my blog then I may as well take this opportunity to review my own books, so here we go then with book review number 3.
3. Killer Roulette
Author…………………Carl Sampson
Published……………2008
Publishing Com….D&B Publishing
Believe it or not, I have had a fair bit of negative reaction from this book but not because of its content. The main direction of the criticism has been geared towards me even writing a book on roulette at all.
The criticism in all fairness has mainly come from people who have not read the book who think that I am claiming that roulette systems beat roulette……that is so naive its laughable.
But anyway, the book is a collection of stories that discuss how to beat the game from numerous different angles. These include biased wheels and the very difficult art of visual tracking. It also discusses staff collusion and other shady areas and is a book that the gaming industry would wish were not on the market.
However I do have some negative things to say about my own book. Firstly I now wish that I had put more information in it. I was under time pressure at the time and had several other projects on the boil and I didn’t devote as much time to the book as what I should have and actually could have.
So this is a regret for me but the book discusses professional cheats on roulette and how they operate as well as a chapter on a story of two guys who actually set out to rob a casino. A fictional chapter that has roots firmly embedded in reality. This fictional chapter was the most enjoyable chapter for me to write and also the most entertaining to read.
It is little surprise when one reads this book why casinos are so paranoid about roulette. The 35/1 pay offs are what make them nervous and CCTV does not protect them fully and they know it. So how many marks would I give my own book in a totally unbiased view.
To be fair, my book does labour under the disadvantage of being a new book whilst the two previous reviews were of absolute classics that have been around a long time. But I certainly cannot award it 10/10 or even 9/10.
I like the book but to be a classic I should have held nothing back but I did and that is going to detract from it. I couldn’t make my mind up on awarding it 7-8/10 so I am going to split the difference.
RATING 7.5/10
