I suppose I really need to discuss poker books on this casino blog as well seeing as poker is played inside casinos. Perhaps the most famous and most iconic book of all time was Supersystem written by Doyle Brunson with a whole host of co-contributors including Chip Reece. This was perhaps the first really great book that lifted the lid on how to play NLHE cash games and also NLHE in tournaments as well. Written by a two time World Champion then this added extra bite to the book and the books overall size made it seem even more imposing to the reader.

It made you feel that if you read and studied this book that you would actually “know” the game of poker and would have knowledge of a system of play that would help you to crush your opponents. The value of this book has been devalued over time because of the online games where stack size is less and in many cases far less. Doyle was only ever active in games with really deep stacks where leverage and fear were key issues.

The style of play that Doyle favours would be much less effective online because players can simply watch you more and this brings in a whole new dynamic. Also there are more players now who understand the style but the book and the contents of the book still have a lot of potential impact even in 2011. For it is and probably always will be the greatest poker book of all time and just because an environment has changed does not detract from the impact that the book has had on the poker population and the poker landscape.
