It is a long time since I last read this book but as I recall it is a highly entertaining read. The author’s Lance Humble and Carl Cooper are both educated to Ph.D level and their thoughts and insights on blackjack are well worth a read in this book.
The book was released in 1998 which is kind of “after the Lord Mayor’s parade” so to speak in blackjack terms. It is difficult now to find anything new and was why I avoided the mathematical side to the game in my book. Telling accounts of events is something that anyone can find interesting but merely restating what has already been said countless times isn’t…….unless you have a new audience to listen to you.
However Humble and Cooper do in fact have new things to say and I won’t spoil the surprise but there are a couple of things in this book that I haven’t seen anywhere else. The core element of the book is based on the Hi-Opt 1 card counting system! I have used many systems down the years although sadly this wasn’t one of them so I cannot comment on its ease of use or its power.
The book discusses many areas including on a basic level, how to play blackjack and behave inside a casino. It discusses blackjack systems, basic strategy and selecting casinos. In short then, the book goes beyond theory and is a sort of good solid blackjack battle manual that any player would learn from irrespective of experience. I wouldn’t say that this is the “World’s Greatest Blackjack Book” but then again I would hazard a guess that the author’s don’t believe this either.
However it is a damn fine book and my rating is…..
