There are many ways to scam casinos but it always helps if you work on the inside or you have someone on the inside. The reason behind this is obvious and if you already work on the inside as a dealer or inspector then you are already beyond the first obstacle and that is being spotted by the dealer or inspector.

Some years ago I came across a delightful little scam that involved coating certain numbers in a roulette wheel with an invisible substance that when hardened, made the roulette ball react differently in terms of bounce.

Now obviously to do this then it requires getting access to a roulette wheel behind closed doors. The chances for gaming floor staff to do this are limited. But then we have the problem of the CCTV cameras spotting this person. So it would also have to be someone who was in charge of manipulating the CCTV cameras as well.

This little scam was so good that the evidence could be removed afterwards with substances like methylated spirits as any scam that involved a roulette wheel would almost certainly lead to that wheel being inspected afterwards.

It is for this reason why casino bosses are very careful with security around roulette but if a wheel could be rigged in this way so that half of the red or black numbers were appearing more or less than normal then that would be a tremendous edge for the player. With eighteen numbers in the wheel for red and black then if nine red numbers were rigged with a substance that prevented the ball from landing in them then what we would have in effect would be a 28 number wheel. So any player who bet on black would no longer stand a 18/37 chance of winning but an 18/28 chance of winning.

This increases the winning chances from 48% to 64%. This is something that is staggeringly high for something that should be slightly worse than a 50-50 proposition.
