The following move was executed by a cheat in one of the casinos where I was but the thing about this move is that it took me a long time to figure out if this guy was actually cheating or not. He would sit on third base which is slang for the last box. Whenever he had a total of 9,10 or 11 that he could double and the double was a good one to take then he would place his additional bet on top of his existing bet. But he would do this immediately while the dealer was still asking the player on the first box what they wished to do with their hand.
This meant that the player on the last box was out of the dealer’s line of sight. The correct procedure for doubles was to place your wager at the side of the existing one. So when the dealer got to him and merely said “eleven double”, this guy merely doubled his wager. But he was now getting even more money onto the table in what was a clearly +EV situation. If he had started with say $10 then his extra $10 placed on the top made $20. So when the dealer who didn’t notice this asked if he wanted to double then he calmly placed another $20 at the side thus making a $40 bet from $10 when it should have only been $20.
However this player also did something else because after he placed his second $10 on the top of the original, he walked across to roulette as if he were inspecting the numbers. I believe this was a deliberate tactic done to give him an out and he could act as if the original bet had been an oversight if he got caught. At the end of the day it is not a crime to not know the rules of a game and he could have claimed that he didn’t properly know procedure or he forgot. I saw him pull this move numerous times and he never got caught doing it.
