I had a good return to playing poker after quite a lengthy absence recently and won just under $2000 playing NL100. I was well ahead of EV and so ran good but adjusted EV was around the $1100 mark. So I will be playing some more poker after trading for quite some time and not really doing anything other than that. Someone asked me the other day why as a pro I don’t play higher levels and how I make money.

Well I don’t play higher levels for several reasons but mainly because those levels demand more time and effort to be able to beat them. I do not have the time anymore and I certainly am not going to put in the effort as I have other things to do. So I play NL100 because I find that the game offers a nice balance as you get a lot of players moving up from low stakes levels whose game has stagnated. This along with the fact that I totally understand the mass psychology of that game at those levels and I just love playing against players who games have stagnated!

Even the players who make money from the games do not crush their levels and that means that they make money in one of three distinct ways. These are by rakeback, exploiting the odd weak error from a fish playing above their level and maybe exploiting the odd playing pattern from other regs. All of this combined does not add up to a crushing earn rate and it usually falls within the 3bb-5bb/100 range.
