In my book Killer Roulette, I described in one chapter a fictional account of two people who conspired to rob a casino by rigging a roulette wheel. One person worked on the outside while another worked on the inside. What they did was to use a substance that when it set, altered the bounce of a roulette ball once it entered the numbers. So coating the black or red numbers with it would leave a strong and very powerful bias that would be difficult to detect in the short term.

The substance was invisible and also easily removed with petrol so that there wasn’t any evidence afterwards. I wrote this story as a fictional account but it was in fact based on some scant information that I had heard some years previously regarding a casino in another country. I knew for a fact that all of the casinos that I ever worked in had strong lapses in their security. This was common knowledge to me but you would never rob one for their daily cash drop because it simply wasn’t large enough.

But rigging a roulette wheel could potentially lead to far greater profits and there was once instance where a mastermind by the name of Vladimir Granec was reported to have made as much as $50 million by getting teams inside casinos to rig their wheels after hours. These are alarming statistics but it also proves that anyone with the nerve and the guile and determination can get at land based casinos.
