I overheard a conversation on a television program the other day (actually it was about poker) regarding roulette. These two so called “experts” were discussing how roulette systems were silly and how could books be written on such subjects? This is just nothing short of total and utter ignorance of the facts. It is pretty well documented how betting systems cannot possibly get a long term edge at roulette and some con men do try and sell systems on the internet as a way to beat the game. In fact I have even seen books saying the same thing.

But these are nothing short of a disgrace to roulette books and websites that do offer decent material on the game. It is difficult to shake off the truth of how roulette cannot be beaten in the conventional way, but why do people have to treat the game in a conventional way? People need to educate themselves in biased wheel play and wheel watching and all of the cheating moves that have enabled some very smart and daring people to have made an awful lot of money from roulette down the years.

In fact there are a fair number of people who have made vast fortunes from the game and the word “vast” is not an exaggeration either. But in all of these cases, the players themselves were not using betting systems and they certainly were not just using plain old fashioned luck either. The fact of the matter is that roulette or traditional roulette is vulnerable and the pay offs of 35/1 make it so.

It is never an easy thing to combat lethargy. It is like a disease that once it gets hold of you then it is very difficult to get out of it again. In my other sports betting blog on bwin I remarked about the plight of horse racing in the UK that was struggling because of falling prize money. This highlights for me the problem with how online gambling has affected the global betting market. Land based casinos basically had it all their own way years ago in terms of their own particular brand of business.

If you wanted to go to gamble then you either had casinos, bingo, the football pools or betting shops. But now the rise and rise of online betting and even the facility for people to do so from their own televisions has had an affect on casino attendances. The casinos in the UK are in a similar situation to horse race meetings in so much that they depend on people getting off their own backsides and going out of their own homes to visit them.

I believe that as the older generation is replaced by a younger and more lethargic generation then this problem will increase and get worse. Land based casinos are going to need to come up with clever and innovative ways just to keep parity but once again we have a problem of too much choice. Do not get me wrong, too much choice is a good thing for the public but a bad thing for each individual outlet. If you are a land based casino which makes a profit of £200,000 per year and you drop to £100,000 per year then £50,000 per year then that is a worrying trend. But an online casino that made a profit of £10,000 per year from scratch is doing well.

Collusion is rife inside casinos and the management know it as well. There has been collusion going off in every casino that I have ever worked at and in some cases, outright theft. The subtle tactics are difficult to police and blackjack is a big example. Let us say that a dealer was colluding with a player. The house edge is around 0.5% and so this means that they take .5% of your action per hour/week/month. So let us say that your average bet is $20 and this dealer delivers 60 hands per hour.

This means that the player is placing $1200/hour in action and the house edge is taking $6/hour from him which is 0.5% of $1200. But let us say that a certain dealer is colluding and on just one hand per hour, decides to do the following. The player stands on 18 and the dealer pulls to 19 and on rapidly paying out all the bets leaves this players bet on the table.

The key to doing this is to make the payouts rapid so that it simply looks like a natural error. Not taking that $20 and doing this once per hour is adding $20/hour to this players earn rate and now putting him on +$14/hour. If other players noticed this then making similar errors on their boxes at some stage would merely look like a poor dealer or a dealer who wasn’t concentrating.

Doing this twice per hour which is feasible suddenly makes the hourly rate $34/hour. The player and the dealer can merely split this and take $17/hour each. This figure is a full $23/hour more than the player would be earning unless they were card counting. But what if the casino had automatic shufflers? You may not be able to card count but you can still collude in this way.

Come and play casino blackjack online on bwin.

Playing backgammon without the doubling cube would basically pull the teeth out of the game so to speak and would eliminate its bite. Imagine horse racing without betting and you are starting to see how the cube figures in terms of importance. Imagine playing poker without playing for money, it simply would not be the same game. You only have to look at poker games on online poker sites at the free money tables to see what I mean. It simply isn’t poker when players cannot lose out financially and need not fear loss.

This is what really makes the game, while it is true that you can play for points and points make matches then it is still the use of the cube and the correct use of it that makes backgammon the game that it is. The difference between a good poker player and a weak poker player is in how much money a good player wins in the pots that they win and how much they lose in the pots that they lose.

So it is essentially about maximising profits and minimising losses and backgammon cash games are basically the same. However just like poker tournaments and cash games, there are clear differences between backgammon cash games and backgammon tournaments although in backgammon tournaments, they are decided by a series of head to head matches unlike poker tournaments where all players participate at the same time.

Come and play online backgammon at bwin.

I had my first casino trip in ages last night and it felt kind of weird to be going back after so long. But there had been huge changes to my regular casino and the blackjack games had automatic shuffling machines. Personally I simply do not like the way that many casinos in the UK have gone. Automating games in that way makes a casino look like an amusement arcade to me. Also the way that they have roulette based on a single centralised wheel surrounded by chairs and computer touch screens is reminiscent of a bingo hall.

I simply do not like casinos when they are laid out in this way and would rather not go at all than go and see this. Not to mention that automatic shuffling machines totally wipe out card counting and shuffle tracking then it is a waste of time going for me personally unless it is a social visit with others. But seeing how I need to travel at least 35 miles to get to a casino that will allow me in then the desire is simply not there. Also I do not even get the desire to play live poker these days as I get the action that I want online.

So alas this will be my last report on my live casino trips and the report will basically be to say that there will be no more reports of this nature. Live casinos are no more for me unless I travel somewhere that has a decent casino in the style of what they used to be before some really “intelligent” people decided in their wisdom to make them into a hybrid resembling amusement arcades and bingo halls.

Comparing Backgammon with Poker is a very relevant analogy for one simple reason, the variance within Backgammon is like poker and this is more the case when two players are almost equal in ability. In poker then when two players are relatively close in ability then it can take a very large number of hands for the superior player to prove themselves. When an expert player comes up against a novice in poker then there is nothing to suggest that the expert will be a favourite over any one individual hand.

But expert poker players would beat novices in a very short time frame and this is especially the case in no-limit poker where you can win someone’s entire stack in one hand. In Backgammon then a novice can beat a world class opponent in one game or a series of games. The dice themselves can win the game and this is down to variance and nothing else. But comparing Backgammon to poker is like comparing Karate with Judo.

Both are martial arts but yet both are the same in many ways but so different in others. I think that all Backgammon players should play poker and vice versa because of the similarities. Strangely I played and became interested in Backgammon before I became interested in poker. This was my first venture into Backgammon and during a stint at another casino I actually won a staff Backgammon tournament during that time although the calibre of opposition was very poor.

Casinos do not like card counters, well actually let me rephrase that……casinos do not like successful card counters. There are legions of card counters who are unsuccessful and casinos make money from them. Let’s face it, if you were a card counter who merely recycled money then any casino should be thrilled to have you. There would be times when this person would be spending money at the bar or in the restaurant and that makes the casino money.

Then there will be times when a card counter brings guests with them or creates action simply by being present on the table as other players may look to play if there is someone else sitting in the game. So it is clear then that not all card counters take money out of casinos. I have known some very experienced card counters that were recycling money due to poor game selection.

This can easily happen in the UK where the selection of casinos isn’t really that great. So you can easily find yourself in a situation where your local casino only has one table active and if that game is poor then you may have to travel a considerable distance to find another casino. So what do you do if this other casino also has only one active table and this game is a poor game also? The worst conditions for card counters are when the dealer isn’t dealing enough cards for high card counts to be worth playing or to arrive frequently enough or if there are too many players and the game is too slow. Knowing how to card count very well is far from being a licence to print money.

What does it take to become a card counter? Or to put that another way, what does it take to win considerable amounts of money from a casino without it being down to luck? Well I think that it takes a special type of person and one that is different than most other people. Like Billy Walters for example who won $2 million from a casino in Atlantic City in 1986. It wasn’t the amount that he won that was the issue but how he did it. To find a biased wheel and then exploit that wheel takes an awful amount of determination.

You must really want to beat the casinos badly in a certain way and this is what I mean by special type of person. There are numerous people down the years who have done similar things but in my mind this really separates them from other successful gamblers in other fields. In poker it is really accepted that a good player will make money and there are many people who do so in the modern online game.

In blackjack in years gone by then there were people that made money from that game but even that game wasn’t difficult when compared to games like roulette or even sports betting for that matter. Roulette is a game where the player is supposed to not be ever able to get an edge due to the in built house edge that can never change. This is true to a certain extent but biased wheels change the equation considerably. Let us say that for instance long run analysis showed that a certain number was arriving once every 33 spins instead of once every 37 spins.

This creates actual odds of 32-1 for this event happening but yet you are being paid 35-1 when it does. So if you bet $10 per spin and saw 33 spins an hour then you would make a good hourly rate exploiting this wheel. You would lose $320 on average on the 32 losing spins but win $350 for the winning spin thus making $30/hour.

There is really nothing to stop you from participating in other forms of gambling inside your local casino. If they have a card room then you can play whatever game you want for money. Where I worked people played games like Kalooki, Mah Jong and Brag for money. But there is really no limitation on what you can play for money or what you can bet on. I have known people or read about people betting on rain drops going down a window pane on which one reached the bottom first.

Poker players have been known to make some amazing prop bets on things like losing weight and golf. But if your casino manager allows it then you may be able to play backgammon which is one of the best gambling games out there and every bit as skilful as poker. I wish that backgammon were played more in casinos and I have only ever seen it played for money on two occasions in the nine years that I worked in gaming.

It would not be impossible to play games like Monopoly for money inside a casino, I have never seen this done and it may have never been done but there is no reason in my mind why it could not be possible. All you need is a card room that is not in use and you can play most games. In all of the casinos that I have worked, there have been nights when the card room was not in use. It may be worth you having a word with the casino general manager on what games they would allow in their card room. Most managers would welcome diverse games if it brought new interest and possibly new players to the club.

I have never liked the word “gambling” and feel that it is used incorrectly by nearly everyone that uses it. To gamble essentially means to take a risk on an outcome that is uncertain. But yet it is the misconception by many people that people who participate in gambling have some sort of problem which really sticks in my throat. At the end of the day, whether you participate in playing roulette, blackjack or any other casino game or betting activity then you are merely paying for entertainment.

That entertainment needs to be treated with respect by both the people on the outside who are voicing uneducated opinions and also by the people on the inside who are using money down these avenues. The concept of addiction needs looking at closely because everyone has the ability to become addicted to something. Addiction basically starts off by you liking something. It really does not matter what it is but if you have done something and then liked it then it is only natural that you want to replicate this and do the same thing again.

We tend to want to do things that we enjoy doing again and shy away from things that we don’t enjoy doing or what do not give us good feelings. It is very difficult to become addicted to something that we do not like or which does not give us pleasure. So by sheer definition then, when we like something then we are more at risk to become addicted to it. So this always has to be treated with respect.
