Everyone knows about how the casino has the edge in all casino related games. Even blackjack with accurate basic strategy, the casino has an edge depending on rules variations of around 0.5%.

Some players are so bad though that I can well imagine that they are conceding around 2%-2.5% to the casino. So all things being equal then, the casino has the edge at blackjack nearly all of the time against nearly all of the players.

But the situation changes when there is a card counter on the table and the casino knows this. If the counter is playing alone then the game is no longer profitable for the casino. It is in this instance where casino counter measures are effective.

However, what if this card counter were active on a table with several other losing players? Now the dynamic shifts because making counter measures in this situation could be counter productive.

This could especially be the case if there was a big player on the table who was a losing player. The entire earn rate of the table can only be arrived at by knowing the hourly rate of each individual player. If the card counter was a small time counter which most are then the best course of action in many instances would be to simply deal the game as before.

Most card counters blow themselves out anyway through a bad run or by not understanding bankroll management. So if a card counter was making say $12/hour, but five other players on the table were jointly losing $15/hour then the casino is making $3/hour despite the presence of the card counter.

So taking counter measures against card counters isn’t something that a casino should necessarily do. I have mentioned this today because I have worked in casinos where the wrong decision was made not once but numerous times.
