I think that it is pretty safe to assume that card counting is a damn site more difficult these days than it used to be. But having said that I really believe that players get their level to a certain point and then stop. This is either because they feel that they know enough about the game or they just prefer playing over studying.

One can hardly blame them as few people really have the time to devote large amounts of time to the study of any subject. This is exactly the same with casino staff. They have far too many things to think about and areas to consider when it comes to gaming to have an in depth knowledge of card counting.

So this means that they know the basics of card counting and knowing the basics means that they can only ever spot a basic counter. So I was surprised this week to read an account from a player who claimed to be very good but who had managed to get themselves barred.

Being good and getting barred or spotted are not connected with each other. In fact they should be very far removed. I just do not believe that a player can claim to be good if they have been spotted and prevented from playing.

The real skill of blackjack is in getting away with it and not in using a counting system and being able to count down a deck in twenty seconds or so. All of these are essential of course but what this shows is in how we can use the bell curve to ascertain average knowledge levels.

What this also shows of course is a principle that professional gamblers and poker players swear by and that is if you want to gain an edge then you have to specialise. You need to know more than the bookmakers, odds compilers, fellow poker players or in this case casino staff.

Only when you specialise and really study a subject can you hope to overcome knowledgeable individuals.
