I once read a delightful book called “Zen in the art of archery“. This book basically looked at what it took to master any field of endeavour. I still have this book somewhere although I haven’t read the book in ages.
I think that irrespective of what ever field you are trying to master, book knowledge will only take you so far. As usual, book theory gives someone a good grounding in a topic but I think that to reach the top in any one field then you need to go beyond the books.
Creativity, imagination and visualisation really take the next step. Einstein once famously said that knowledge was limited but imagination had no boundaries…….or he said words to that effect. This is why I think that making money from blackjack with just book knowledge behind you is something of a non-starter.
Simply put, you are striving to learn things that the casinos largely know anyway. It is little use having fantastic mathematical knowledge in how to beat blackjack if you get caught counting.
The guy with the imagination but with less technical knowledge may approach it another way. He may know the General Manager personally and become so likable to the casino staff that no one wants to ruin his fun. I have known this to be the case on one occasion although the card counter concerned wasn’t playing for significant stakes.
But if all of this was part of some clever pre-conceived plan then it would be very creative. All this creates a situation where a player can ply their trade in peace knowing that the staff like them and they would never be seen as a threat. It would be very advantageous for a counter to spend a good couple of months playing blackjack inside a casino getting to know the staff and making as many friends as possible before actually counting…….but how many people would go to those lengths.
See you soon
