Back when I was in gaming, the final casino where I worked before I left to pursue the career of a financial consultant undertook to perform a most amazing thing on roulette. They actually reduced the table maximums on their highest value table. When the casino first opened you could bet £1000 on even chances and columns and up to £100 on the number. These were substantial wagers for such a relatively small casino with a modest daily cash drop.

But one single Asian punter changed all that and this was a punter who was very adept at reading a spin. At first we all thought that it was just a fluke because he was winning large amounts of money relative to the stakes. He was winning amounts of between £5k and £10k every week. Usually as well his bets were so large in relation to other peoples in the casino that action sometimes dried up on the other tables when other players came to watch the action.

So this was a double whammy for the casino when this punter just happened to win. But one evening I arrived at work to be told by the manager that the maximum on that table had been reduced to £50 on the number and £500 on even chances. This was an amazing move and also an amazing confession that this punter was beating the casino and that the casino was taking measures to protect itself.

This led to a confrontation one evening when the same punter placed a bet on roulette and the Inspector didn’t inform him of the change in limits. His first bet was a winning £100 on the number which he was then informed could only be £50 and £50 was handed back to him. You can imagine the uproar after this happened but I cannot remember if he got paid in that one instance or not.
